rydberg [′rid‚bərg]
(atomic physics)
A unit of energy used in atomic physics, equal to the square of the charge of the electron divided by twice the Bohr radius; equal to 13.605698 ± 0.000004 electronvolts. Symbolized ry.
(spectroscopy)

Rydberg

(Ry), a subsidiary unit of energy used in atomic physics and optics. It was named in honor of J. R. Rydberg. It is defined by the equation 1 Ry = hcR, where h is Planck’s constant, c is the velocity of light, and R is the Rydberg constant; numerically, 1 Ry = 13.60 electron volts—that is, 1 Rydberg is equal to the ionization energy of an atom of hydrogen. The Rydberg is a convenient unit for measuring the energy of atomic states. In the Hartree atomic system of units, 1 Ry is equal to one-half of an energy unit; in the centimeter-gram-second system, 1 Ry = 2.1796 × 10-11 erg.

Rydberg - Reynold Roland Rydberg, 71, of Eugene, died Nov.
Known as a Rydberg molecule, it is formed through an elusive and extremely weak chemical bond between two atoms, BBC reported.
This picture dates back to June 9, 1936, and shows the famous four-masted Swedish barque, Abraham Rydberg, arriving in Blyth for repairs to her main topmast, damaged in a collision with a steamer in the English Channel.
