Saffian

a leather prepared by tanning sheepskins or goatskins with tannides and dyeing in bright colors. Saffian is used for shoe uppers, bookbindings, and similar items. It originated in Asia Minor and has been manufactured in Russia and Western Europe since the mid-18th century. As a result of the transition to the tanning of soft leathers for footwear with mineral tanning agents, such as chromium compounds, saffian is now manufactured in the USSR only for local shoe types in the eastern regions.
