Saki

 orig. H(ector) H(ugh) Munro

(born Dec. 18, 1870, Akyab, Burma—died Nov. 14, 1916, near Beaumont-Hamel, France) Scottish writer. A journalist early in his career, he wrote political satires and worked as a foreign correspondent before settling in London in 1908. His comic short stories and sketches, which satirize the Edwardian social scene, were published in Reginald (1904), Reginald in Russia (1910), The Chronicles of Clovis (1911), and Beasts and Super-Beasts (1914); the best-known include “Tobermory” and “The Open Window.” Studded with epigrams and with well-contrived plots, his stories reveal a vein of cruelty and a self-identification with the enfant terrible. He was killed in action in World War I.

Saki 

a city and administrative center of Saki Raion, Crimean Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Located on Lake Saki, 4 km from the Black Sea. Railroad station on the Evpatoriia-Ostriakovo line. Industry is represented by a chemical plant and food-processing enterprises.

Saki is a pelotherapeutic health resort 20 km from Evpatoriia. Summers are very warm, with an average July temperature of 23 °C, and winters are mild, with an average February temperature of - 1 °C. Precipitation totals 380 mm annually.

Therapeutic remedies include the use of mud and saltwater from Lake Saki. A mineral spring with thermal water (45°C) and an aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate and a chlorine ion that is used for bathing and drinking is located 7 km from Saki. Diseases of the joints, bones, muscles, nervous system, and the skin, as well as gynecological ailments, are treated. Saki also has sanatoriums and a water and mud treatment facility.

Saki 

a drainless salt lake in Crimean Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Located south of Lake Sasyk, 20 km from Evpatoriia, Lake Saki lies 2.1 m below sea level. It has an area of 8.1 sq km and measures 5.5 km in length. Its maximum width is 3 km, and the average depth is 0.8 m. The bottom is covered with a thick layer of silt mineral mud. Lake Saki is fed by sea and subterranean waters and by melted snow and rain. The resort city of Saki is located on the lake.
