The Dukhan field in the west is said to be related to a salt wall.
Dating from the 13th century, the mine produced table salt up to 2007 and is famous for its sculptures and vast chambers -- including a "cathedral" -- chiseled out of salt walls over the centuries.
It might be convenient that radiation doesn't penetrate through the thick salt walls, but that's actually not why the Department of Energy chose the salt formation as a home for the WIPP site.
