Sand Sedge
(Carex arenaria,) a perennial herb of the family Cyperaceae. The plant’s far-creeping rhizome, which is 2–5 mm thick, emits a pleasant odor when bruised. The stems are 15–40 cm tall and have tough leaves. The spicate inflorescences are brownish and consist of eight to 15 spikelets, and the utricles (fruit-containing organs) are broad-winged. Sand sedge is found along the Atlantic coast of Europe. In the USSR it grows along the Baltic coast and in Pskov Oblast. The plant is found predominantly in dunes and other sandy areas. It helps prevent sand erosion. The rhizome, which contains traces of essential oils, mucus, tar, and tannins, is used medicinally as a substitute for sarsaparilla.
