Sanding in woodworking, the processing of workpieces with abrasive materials, such as sandpaper, and with special tools, such as brushes and wire disks, immediately after planing, shaping operations, routing, puttying, or priming. In sanding unvarnished surfaces, the abrasive materials are moved in the direction of the wood grain; otherwise, the wood fibers are cut, and subsequent application of varnish or paint causes the fibers to rise, resulting in a rough surface.
