It is of immense strength while they multiply their sangars daily.
The Puniali levies, still on the hill above Nilt, built themselves a dominating and spacious blockhouse from which fire could be brought down on the sangars across the ravine.
On 7 December an attempt was made to carry the lower end of the line of sangars, nearest the Hunza River.
Before the moon rose on the night of 19 December, Lieutenant Manners-Smith, who was an experienced mountaineer, led fifty Gurkhas and fifty Kashmiri Dogras with ropes and pickaxes quietly out of camp and, crossing the Nilt River unobserved, halted in the dead ground at the bottom of the cliffs underneath the Nagari sangars.
In the sangars - or watchtowers - each of which overlooks two others, there is little to do but stare, for hour after hour, through binoculars or night-vision sights across the approaches to the camp.
If the guards in the sangars notice anything suspicious they call us up," says QRF commander Sergeant Shane Mealor.
The only relief is the hourly radio check and the switch to another sangar every two hours.
