sannyasiIn Hinduism, one who renounces all ties with family and society and pursues spiritual liberation. Sannyasis are a class of sadhu that do not live in communities, instead leading a mendicant, itinerant life. Those recognized as having achieved full self-knowledge are considered free of all worldly rules and duties, including those pertaining to caste, and are not required to carry out image worship or offerings. After death, their bodies, rather than being cremated, are buried in a seated, meditative posture. How to thank TFD for its existence? | The Sannyasin took the vow of dedicating his life to Truth and to the service of humanity, and was honored as a spiritual leader of society. Among his singular innovations was to become, insofar as he could, an Indian holy man, or sannyasin, in order to help bridge the cultural divide preventing the preaching of the Gospel to the higher strata of Indian society. The householder reached his state of perfection by means of Karma-Yoga --a spiritual discipline which dedicated all the fruits of human action to God while the monk or the sannyasin found his salvation through Jnana Yoga--in complete renunciation of all human action except those for the greater benefit of the world and self-realization (Vivekananda 19-37). |
