Sarong

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Wikipedia 0.02 sec.
Sarong

a national garment worn by men and women in Indonesia and Malaysia. Resembling a long skirt, the garment consists of a long piece of material wound around the lower half of the body from the waist to the ankles. Women sometimes wear a sarong so that its upper edge reaches the middle of the chest, tightly covering it. Sarongs are made of colored cotton; on the islands of Java and Bali, they are usually made of batik. Similar garments are common among some of the peoples of continental Southeast Asia and the Philippines.

They thronged the narrow length of our schooner's decks with their ornamented and barbarous crowd, with the variegated colours of checkered sarongs, red turbans, white jackets, embroideries; with the gleam of scabbards, gold rings, charms, armlets, lance blades, and jewelled handles of their weapons.
