Scalare
(Pterophyllum scalare), a fish of the family Cichlidae of the order Perciformes. The tall, laterally compressed body is about 15 cm long and about 26 cm high. The dorsal and anal fins are elongate, and the pelvic fins are drawn out into filaments. The intensity of the transverse black stripes against a silvery background varies with the fish’s health and maintenance. The scalare inhabits stagnant and sluggish channels and bays of rivers in northern South America. It is a popular aquarium fish. Several new forms have been bred.
