an emergency shutdown of a nuclear reactor

scram [skram]
(nucleonics)
A sudden shutting down of a nuclear reactor, usually by dropping safety rods, when a predetermined neutron flux or other dangerous condition occurs.
To close down a reactor by bringing about a scram.
