Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Wikipedia | 0.04 sec. |
scuba divingSwimming done underwater with a self-contained underwater-breathing apparatus (scuba), as opposed to skin diving, which requires only a snorkel, goggles, and flippers. Scuba gear was invented by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Émile Gagnan in 1943. Diving clubs formed quickly as the technology became widely available. Scuba diving is used in oceanography, in underwater exploration and salvage work, in the study of water pollution, and for recreation. |

Or take a morning scuba-dive to see underwater ecosystems in a coral reef -- and still make it back for geometry class in the afternoon? The Mortons' five-week itinerary is focused on the South Pacific, with stops in Rarotonga and Papeete, Tahiti; Christchurch, New Zealand; and a 16-day tour of Australia that includes Ayers Rock and the Great Barrier Reef -- where Tim will scuba-dive for the first time and Mom plans to snorkel. |
