sea pen, long, slender colonial organism of the same phylum as the jellyfish. Sea pen colonies are formed by several genera of the order Pennatulacea. The colony consists of a stalk formed by an organism called a primary polyp (see polyp and medusa polyp and medusa, names for the two body forms, one nonmotile and one typically free swimming, found in the aquatic invertebrate phylum Cnidaria (the coelenterates).

Late in 1997, as the deadline approached for Keiko's next step to freedom, to an Icelandic sea pen, a dispute arose among the adults in charge.
From there, it was onto a barge and a brief sail under blue skies, past spectacular 800-foot-high volcanic cliffs to a sea pen the size of a football field, where Keiko will try to adapt to his old environment.
