sea whip, erect colony of marine animals of the phylum Cnidaria, with whiplike branches. The skeleton consists of a horny axis, overlaid with small calcareous bodies called spicules. Often beautifully colored, sea whips and the closely related sea fans sea fan, colonial marine animal forming erect, flattened, branching colonies in tropical and subtropical waters. Colonies may be several feet high and are often colorful, with purples, reds, and yellows predominating.

The plankton-consuming sea whip Pseudopterogorgia elisabethae is a soft-coral animal, purple in color and 2-3 feet in length, which lives permanently attached to coral along the entire 125-mile length of Grand Bahama Island.
