self-actualization

the realization of personal potential. The term is associated with MASLOW's (1954) hierarchy of needs, where it is at the peak, only being achievable, according to his theory, if all other biological and social needs have been met. It is used more generally within the HUMANISTIC MOVEMENT to which the concepts of SELF and personal growth are central.
