Short horizontal lines added to the tops and bottoms of traditional typefaces, such as Times Roman. Contrast with sans-serif.

Whereas Gray had focused on the sans serif letter that Ghiberti and Donatello pioneered in Florence between 1410 and 1430, Mardersteig shifted the emphasis to seriffed capitals constructed along geometric lines that appeared after the middle of the century.
There are sketches, collages, paintings, even murals reproduced and printed carefully on large glossy white pages with lots of the white showing - space for a single poetic line set in a large, delicate seriffed type face.
