The height at which, under standard atmospheric conditions, an aircraft is unable to climb faster than a specified rate (100 feet or 30 meters per minute in the United States, Great Britain, and Canada).

service ceiling

The altitude at which the maximum sustained rate of climb falls to 500 ft/min for jet engine aircraft and 100 ft/min for piston engine aircraft. In some definitions, a figure of 100 ft/min is used for all types of aircraft.
