service discovery
The capability of automatically identifying a hardware or software service in a network such as a scanner, printer, Web server or shared file. Discovery systems either use central depositories where services are registered, or they provide a method for querying every device on the network. See Zeroconf, UPnP, UDDI, SLP and Web services.

Service discovery is designed to allow two disparate devices, such as a printer and a PC, to communicate their functional capabilities to one another to determine whether one can use the other.
