Sfumato
a device in painting consisting of the softening of outlines and chiaroscuro so as to produce an atmospheric effect. The human and animal figures are highly modelled and the whole picture is finished in a continuous range of smoky tones using the device of sfumato. In contrast, bare skin appears soft and supple because Dujardin studied the Italian Renaissance masters' painting technique of sfumato, in which the artist paints what appears to be the moist air that hovers just above the naked limbs of the figures. |
