(meteorology)
The northwest wind in the lower valley of the Tigris and Euphrates and the Persian Gulf; it may set in suddenly at any time, and generally lasts from 1 to 5 days, dying down at night and freshening again by day; but in June and early July it continues almost without cessation (the great or 40-day shamal).

It is the children that I feel for most here, for they are denied the open-air freedom I grew up with at home, thanks to blistering heat for several months of the year, or choking dust storms when the shamals come.
Every year, we get shamals - these northwesterly winds are funnelled into the Arabian Gulf by the mountains of Turkey and Iraq to the northeast and the high plains of Saudi Arabia to the southwest and create sandstorms.
The current westerly winds, known as Shamals, have influenced the weather since last Thursday.
