Sheaf 

(of fire), a military term.

(1) Battery sheaf, the mutually coordinated direction of the barrels of several guns (mortars, combat vehicle weapons), placed in one firing position for shooting at a single target. In preparing a battery for fire, a parallel sheaf is formed, in which the axes of the bores of all guns are placed parallel to the axis of the bore of the main gun (mortar, combat vehicle weapon). Depending on the direction of the bore axes (guides) in relation to one another, the sheaf can be parallel, converging, or diverging.

(2) Sheaf of battery explosions, simultaneous explosion of charges (mines) of several guns (mortars, combat vehicle weapons), placed in one firing position. Firing for adjustment is carried out with parallel battery sheafs. Firing to hit, depending on the width of the target, can be done by a concentrated battery sheaf (all guns aimed at one point) or by a battery sheaf along the width of the target.

Sheaf 

a bundle of stalks of cultivated plants measuring 20–30 cm in diameter. Harvesting machines use binding mechanisms that tie flax, hemp, kenaf, and other crops into sheaves and place them in shocks to dry. In prerevolutionary Russia and during the first five-year plans in the USSR, sheaves were tied by hand when grain was harvested. In countries where agriculture is not highly mechanized, this method is used in the harvest of wheat, rice, beans, kenaf, flax, and other crops.
