To temporarily exit an application and go back to the operating system to perform some function. When the operation is completed, control is returned to the application.
shell out - [Unix] To spawn an interactive subshell from within a program (e.g. a mailer or editor). "Bang foo runs foo in a subshell, while bang alone shells out."
