Shelving

multitiered racks for the storage of various objects and materials. Shelving consists of a series of vertical stands or walls with horizontal open or closed shelves. It is installed in residences, storage facilities, book depositories and libraries, and stores. The design and dimensions correspond to the given use and the nature, size, and shape of the objects and materials to be stored. Shelving is frequently assembled from component sections, and the shelves or brackets, which are usually detachable, can be mounted at some specified height. Adjustable shelving is often designed to rotate about a vertical axis and is used to store small items, such as drugs and tools. Mobile shelving, which can be moved manually or by electric drive, is used to store freight that must be dispatched and delivered to specific locations. Shelving used in mechanized storage facilities is equipped with tiered hand carts, devices for dispatching individual objects or containers, and other mechanization equipment.
