sima [′sī·mə]
(petrology)
A petrologic term for the lower layer of the earth's crust, composed of silica- and magnesia-rich rocks; source of basaltic magma; sima is equivalent to the lower part of the continental crust and the bulk of the oceanic crust. Also known as intermediate layer.
