slashdot effect

The condition in which a Web site is overloaded with traffic because of a positive news article or review published at another Web site. The term comes from Slashdot.com, the "News for Nerds" site that posts articles on technical subjects submitted by users. The term has evolved to mean any electronic onslaught. For example, to "slashdot a vote" means to bombard congressmen by e-mail before a critical vote. For information, visit www.slashdot.com.


(jargon)slashdot effect - An effect where a document on a WWW server is linked to from another, popular, site, with the resultant traffic overloading the server so that a connection cannot be made to it. This is especially likely if the server is running Microsoft IIS.

The term was coined by readers of the Unix advocacy web site slashdot.org.
