EMERSON TELLS US that truth is "such a flyaway, such a slyboots, so untransportable and unbarrelable a commodity, that it is as bad to catch as light. Some of the characters have appeared, at least briefly, in some of his other books, while some are at least reminiscent of earlier characters; for example, Slyboots Browne who recalls the entrepreneurial trickster Martin Bear Charme in Earthdivers: Tribal Narratives on Mixed Descent. |
