Materials that can significantly change their mechanical properties (such as shape, stiffness, and viscosity), or their thermal, optical, or electromagnetic properties, in a predictable or controllable manner in response to their environment.
Materials that perform sensing and actuating functions, including piezoelectrics, electrostrictors, magnetostrictors, and shape-memory alloys.

1129 TA1750 This volume collects 47 papers from the "Materials, Devices, and Characterization for Smart Systems" symposium conducted during the December 2008 meeting of the Materials Research Society for the purpose of describing new developments and achievements in the areas of smart materials, sensing and actuating devices, and intelligent/smart systems.
In addition, one day workshop on Smart Materials is also being arranged on 10th April, 2009.
Our reputation as a thought leader in the area of smart materials for the medical device industry is now enhanced by the acquisition of Memry Corporation by the SAES Getters Group.
