smart terminal A display terminal that provides keyboard input and screen output and no data processing capability. Smart terminals flourished in the days of minicomputers and mainframes. Also called "dumb terminals," smart terminals technically had a few more screen functions such as the ability to reverse the video (black on white) and display underlines. They also handled the more complex protocols of the mainframe and some minicomputers. See 3270 and VT100.smart terminal [′smärt ′tər·mən·əl] (computer science)
