(design engineering)
A form of spring used as a fastener; the ring is elastically deformed, put in place, and allowed to snap back toward its unstressed position into a groove or recess.

The new design features a snap ring over the end cap that, when removed, allows the heater to be removed without disturbing the tip, end cap, or nozzle thread.
BEAULIEU: Torque converter components, drivetrain yokes, steering rack tooth profiles, sector shaft gear tooth profiles, and snap ring grooves on drivetrain components.
In the diagram, note how the original bore is intact outside of the snap ring groove and also for about 3/16-inch inside of the groove.
