sneeze, involuntary violent expiration of air through the nose and mouth. It results from stimulation of the nervous system in the nose, causing sudden contraction of the muscles of expiration. The stimulus can include any irritating factor in the nose—inflammation of the tissues as the result of a cold or infection, allergic irritants (hay fever hay fever, seasonal allergy causing inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose and eyes. Allergists said Tuesday that they're being inundated with sneezers and wheezers looking for the latest cures. But to minimize your risk, ask people to cover their nose and mouth when they cough or sneeze (and do the same yourself), keep your distance from coughers or sneezers, keep your surroundings clean and wash your hands often. Paul Blake, director of the Georgia state epidemiology office, advises people not to be as worried about the sneezers as the office's shared surfaces, such as fax machines, door handles and vending-machine buttons. |
