A wood scale, calibrated in inches, used in regions of deep snow to measure its depth; it is bolted to a wood post or angle iron set in the ground. Also known as snow scale.

FACT: Alpine Meadows has 6 feet of snow depth at the base and 14 feet at the mid-mountain snow stake and above.
Prior to expected heavy snowstorms, be sure the location of the propane tank and other equipment is marked by snow stakes which should extend well above the maximum anticipated snow depth.
