Also known as sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide, this common disinfectant, found in liquid bleach, drain cleaners and oven cleaners (combined with caustic lye), can burn skin and eyes and be fatal if swallowed. 25% sodium hypochlorite solution already diluted in accordance with the CDC's bloodborne pathogen mandate. As a potential alternative, we investigated catalytic oxidation using TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxy radical), sodium bromide, and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). |
