soft key

(1) A keyboard-style key that serves multiple purposes on small devices such as cellphones and PDAs with limited room. Soft keys are located adjacent to a screen or readout that displays the function selected when the key is pressed.

In this cellphone example, the same physical key becomes the Call key after you enter a telephone number and then switches to the End key, the next logical function.


(2) A simulated button or keyboard key that is displayed on a touch screen. The soft key is tapped with the finger or stylus for activation. See touch screen and virtual keyboard.
