sonde [sänd]
(engineering)
An instrument used to obtain weather data during ascent and descent through the atmosphere, in a form suitable for telemetering to a ground station by radio, as in a radiosonde.
(petroleum engineering)
A downhole probe that measures the physical characteristics of the surrounding rocks, recording the measurements as a continuous depth record (log).
