A general term used to encompass the processes of adsorption, absorption, desorption, ion exchange, ion exclusion, ion retardation, chemisorption, and dialysis.

Whereas compound 1 had very narrow variation in fluid sorption in the three fluids (non-ATF 15W40, ATF-1 and Dexron), compound 2 showed small swelling in the two ATF fluids but shrinkage in the non-ATF fluid.
