Like Prohibition-era speakeasies, the Santa Monica jazz club doesn't offer easy access: After visitors enter through the back door of the building, travel to the top floor and knock on the door, a peephole opens and a password is required to gain entry. In fact, it was immigrants like Giuseppe and Mike Gallo who facilitated much of the activity of speakeasies (Barr 169). The cast includes composers, playwrights, and wits, as well as the old monied crowd who hung out with them in speakeasies, at parties on the East Side, and for weekends at splendid country homes on the Hudson. |
