(histology)
A male germ cell immediately before assuming its final typical form.

Spermatid 

a developing male sexual cell during spermatogenesis. Spermatids are formed in groups of four from secondary spermatocytes as a result of the second meiotic division. They are haploid and do not divide. After passing through a cycle of structural changes, they develop into spermatozoa.

In males, examination of nuclear characteristics and cell size revealed that the germ cells could be classified into four stages: spermatogonium, spermatocyte, spermatid, and spermatozoa.
In our research, some of these spermatid continued to grow, elongating and pushing out a tail which enabled it to move - forming the in vitro derived sperm or IVD sperm.
