| Umbrella plant joins a select group of indestructible species that started out as indoor plants, but somehow found their way into the shade garden, including mother-in-law tongue (Sansevieria), spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) and cast iron plant (Aspidistra elatior). A 1994 German study further reported that one spider plant could, in six, hours, detoxify a 100-cubic-foot room laden with formaldehyde. In fact, Wolverton says, compared with the Gerbera daisy, potted mum and banana (Musa oriana), the spider plant is only second-rate. |
