Initially, Spillers's exploration of father/daughter incest might seem ill-suited for Nugent's novel as the daughter in this case is a son, and the African American context which Spillers explores is largely absent in Geisha Man, as Kondo is Japanese and white. I would argue, though, that the essays which achieve a critical distance are the most successful and the most interesting; essays by Hortense Spillers, Peter B. Spillers is an imaginative, though sometimes abstruse, essay that demonstrates the validity of Gates' argument. |
