In the scope presentation of the standard loran (2000 kilohertz), signals the slow diminution of the leading or lagging edge of the pulse so that it resembles two pulses and eventually a single pulse, which appears to be normal but which may be displaced in time by as much as 10,000 microseconds; this phenomenon is caused by shifting of the E₁reflections from the ionosphere, and if the deformation is that of the leading edge and is not detected, it will cause serious errors in the reading of the navigational parameter.
