spotting [′späd·iŋ]
(engineering)
Fitting one part of a die to another part by applying an oil color to the surface of the finished part and bringing this against the surface of the intended mating part, the high spots being marked by the transferred color.
(mining engineering)
Bringing mine cars or surface wagons to the correct spot for loading, discharging, or any other purpose.

spotting
A paint-film defect characterized by small circular or irregular areas having color or gloss different from that of the surrounding background.
