Scilla
(squill), a genus of perennial early-spring bulbous herbs of the family Liliaceae. The leaves are in a radical cluster. The flowers, which are mostly dark or light blue, are solitary or in a raceme at the apex of a leafless stem. The perianth is campanulate or rotate and has six segments. The fruit is a capsule. There are about 60 species, distributed predominantly in the Mediterranean region. The USSR has 13 species, growing mainly in the Caucasus. S. sibirica grows in forests, along forest edges, and in thickets. A number of species, including S. bifolia, S. hyacinthoides, and S. sibirica, are cultivated as ornamentals. Occasionally species of the genera Hepatica and Mercurialis are called squill. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
