Starch Equivalent

a unit of evaluating the food value of feeds in terms of productivity, indicating the amount of starch equal to 100 kg feed (relative to fat storage). The concept was developed by the German scientist O. Kellner at the turn of the 20th century on the basis of respiration experiments with fattened oxen. The starch equivalent is used in Great Britain, the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, and other countries, and it serves as the basis for calculating the Soviet feed unit in the USSR.
