Spielberg had told interviewers he wanted to make a film about an "American refugee experience," giving those of us living in the world's last superpower a taste of the terror and powerlessness that is the daily bread of the world's nearly 40 million refugees, displaced, and stateless persons.
Although now a stateless person, he lived in what is now Israel until he was 20--often in trouble and under house arrest for refusing to carry the Israeli-man-dated identity papers and insisting on reciting his poetry.
When the dust settled, he was accepted by the French government as a stateless person.
