It used 36 performers, including eight dancers from Southern Methodist University, a steel band (music by composer Nigel Chase, her nephew), and Mia Kanazawa's 25-foot puppet made of cable. Held in Brooklyn Heights' historic Plymouth Church, authors Pat Cummings, Leo and Diane Dillon, Javaka Steptoe, Tonya Borden, Gregory Christie and Lynette Velasco all made appearances along with the New York All Stars Steel Band and Caribbean storytellers. Though its pressed steel band, coated with zinc and interspersed with plastic spacers, hardly looks impressive, Cole says it can be the difference between a tire blowing out and merely running flat. |
