Stepfather

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Wikipedia 0.02 sec.
Stepfather

a nonbiological father, the spouse of a woman with children by a previous marriage. According to Soviet law, a stepfather has no personal rights or obligations in relation to his stepchildren. He is obligated to support minor stepchildren only if they are being reared or supported by him and have no parents or if the parents do not have sufficient means to support the children. Stepchildren, for their part, must support a stepfather who reared or supported them if he is incapable of working or is in need of their help. A court may release stepchildren from the obligation to support a stepfather if the period of rearing or support was brief (under RSFSR law, less than five years) or if the stepfather did not properly fulfill his obligations as a parent.
