Rilievo stiacciato, or rilievo schiacciato ("flattened relief") is a finely graded, low relief of flattened transitions where the overlapping parts are, to some extent, falsified for purely three- dimensional effects.
The reliefs form the subject of an essay by Nicholas Penny, who reminds us that Vasari rarely used the (now) conventional term of stiacciato or 'flattened' to describe the shallow depth of carving pioneered by Donatello and taken up with such bravura by Desiderio.
