stoa (stō`ə), in ancient Greek architecture, an extended, roofed colonnade on a street or square. Early examples consisted of a simple open-fronted shed or porch with a roof sloping from the back wall to the row of columns along the front. Later stoas were often immense, running to two stories, each with a colonnade of a different order and having a ridged roof supported on internal colonnades; rows of shops or offices lined the back wall, which was sometimes decorated with paintings. Such stoas surrounded the agora or marketplace of every large city and were used for public meetings. The Stoa Poecile on the north side of the agora of Athens was the favorite meeting place of the philosopher Zeno of Citium Zeno of Citium (zē`nō, sĭsh`ēəm), c.334–c.262 B.C., Greek philosopher, founder of Stoicism . ..... In The Stoas it was the idea of the space within a vase that motivated me, but finally we do not see vases in the film; there are only my hands in an "empty" space. On to this Cartesian carpet is imposed a 6m square structural grid, so the transparent offices read as rational colonnades or stoas (the services emerge from the plinth below). Beta tester Carlo van Haren of the Stoas Group, a large knowledge management and educational consulting company in the Netherlands, stated that "the bridge brings two of the most user-friendly educational systems together, in an easy-to-use manner. |
