The potential degradation and crippling effects of confinement beneath the surface are underscored in O'Neill's 1922 drama The Hairy Ape in the scenes set below deck on an ocean liner (scenes i and iv in the fireman's forecastle, scene iii in the actual stokehole of the ship), where O'Neill's stage directions indicate his wish to make explicit in production the aspect of confinement:
