stop bath [′stäp ‚bath] (graphic arts) When a negative or print is removed from the developer, it is usually placed in a stop bath to halt the action of the developer immediately; a common stop bath is a solution of 2 to 5% acetic or citric acid, or potassium metabisulfite.
